WEEK TWO
THE TWELVE STYLES

INTRODUCTION

Sun sign astrology columns in the media inadvertantly promote a kind of archetypal chauvinism (laugh and then, weep), resulting in a naive scapegoating of any sign -- "I hate Aries, they can be so bossy!" or "Pisces! Yeachh.. too clingy!" -- because a sour experience we might have had with a person of a particular Sun sign. When we react and think like this, we shut ourselves off from whatever that sign represents within ourselves and narrow our access to our Multidimensional Whole Self. Every sign, or Style, in the zodiac exists within each of us at various degrees of latency and expression (note all the signs on the outer circle of your chart). We are not only more than we think; we are more than we can think.

Sometimes the best way to understand any astrological style is to study its opposite. When we become fixated in one style or another, it can manifest as a kind of rigidity in the ego structure or personality. We can achieve more flexibility and balance by empasizing the opposite sign. If you're stuck in a Leo rut of selfish behavior, try being a sociable Aquarius for a day. One sign that's likely to become over-emphasized might be the Rising sign, or Ascendent, since it expresses itself through our behavior, how we tend to act out. For example, I have Scorpio Rising and when I become fixated there I act out in overly-obsessive and sometimes morose behavior. I find balance through Taurus in those experiences that simplify my life. More on The Ascendent later. The twelve styles represent six polarities, or six sets of contraries. These mated pairs are not separate but expressions of the larger spectrum of YOU.
